常見問題解答 (FAQ)

Why do Chilean vines not require grafting onto American rootstocks?

Chile is a natural viticultural fortress protected by monumental barriers: the towering Andes mountains to the east, the icy Pacific Ocean to the west, the Atacama Desert to the north, and Antarctic glaciers to the south. The dreaded phylloxera pest never crossed these borders. As a result, vines in Maipo grow on their own unadulterated European rootstocks (*Vitis vinifera*), yielding unprecedented pure vine-to-grape sap transmission.

What gives Alto Maipo Cabernet its famous mint and eucalyptus note?

The unique aroma is driven by chemical terpenes (notably 1,8-cineole) transported by mountain breezes from native boldo trees and ancient eucalyptus groves bordering Andean vineyards. These aromatic oils settle on grape skins during the ripening season, imparting an invigorating herbal lift.

What is Carmenère's connection to Maipo and Chile?

Carmenère was an ancient Bordeaux grape thought to have gone completely extinct after the 1860s phylloxera epidemic in France. In 1994, French ampelographer Jean-Michel Boursiquot discovered that Chilean vineyards thought to be late-ripening Merlot were in fact Carmenère! Today, Chile produces the world's finest Carmenère: dark, silky, with black plum, green peppercorn, and smoked paprika.
